Creepy Big Heads

For Halloween we dressed up as Matt and Roxanne Hammett and Scott and Linsey Wildey. Oddly enough, it ended up feeling like some sort of weird sociological experiment. People wouldn't talk to us, or if they would, they wouldn't look at us. As we were walking around, with much difficulty as we couldn't hardly see anything or breathe very well, people would point, stare, laugh, and run, without actually speaking with us. I feel like I could go out and write some sort of Master's thesis on what we experienced that night - it was all worth it if not solely for the reactions of those we dressed up as. For some good cheap fun, print out enlarged pictures of your friends' heads and dress accordingly.

What Fantasy Character am I?

"A strong-willed herald of causes against injustice, you passionately strive to right the wrongs around you. Somebody has to save our skins! Leia is a character in the Star Wars universe."

Yes! What girl doesn't want to be in the ranks with Princess Leia?! Strong, subversive, seeking good, and those braided buns. I mean wow.

aparently i AM somebody

After Doug opened my eyes to new information about myself, I excitedly ran downstairs to share it with whoever would listen. Kevin pointed out the similarities between my actions and those of Steve Martin in The Jerk when he opens up the phonebook to proclaim: "I am somebody now!" But come on, being picture number six of twelve is pretty exciting when it comes to BBCnews.com. I guess, in the future, it would help to actually follow up after sending in pictures to random news publications.

Oh, camera phone

Something is awry at the "Normal" Heights Vons. I'm not sure what the kids will think when they unsuspectingly go into the "Snack" aisle and find the micro brews, wines, and of course, the bathroom tissue, cat food, and paper towels. That could make for a very interesting party.

"Wow man, how long did that take to grow?!"

ET phone home

It might seem a bit odd to all the 16th floor elevator riders that I'm sitting in the window overlooking the city from this particular vantage point, instead of from my room or the lobby, but it's because I wouldn't have experienced the quasi-cast of ET riding by on their BMXes otherwise. The six of them raced in succession through the alley in their pegged jeans and hooded sweatshirts around the corner.

From where I sit, I am encased by the patches of the city - the old bricks, the new bricks, the paint from the 40s, the lights from the 90s, and the hundreds of tiny ants marching their way from the convention center, all commingling together. One small triangular block of row buildings is missing one of its sections as though a bulldozer came through and took it in one fail swoop, leaving a patched Tijuana house look on the buildings surrounding it. The windows ahead of me reflect my hotel in a wavy, waterfall-like reflection, and the wind is causing those below to bundle up and walk briskly. One eyelet opens up in the clouds out beyond the river, proving the sky is still somewhere blue. These are things I would not see from the lobby, and which make me curse the dead battery in the camera.

Lewis Carroll Said:

"Alice laughed: "There's no use trying," she said; "one can't believe impossible things."

"I daresay you haven't had much practice," said the Queen. "When I was younger, I always did it for half an hour a day. Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast."

Alice in Wonderland

Talking Bible Dolls

Oh no. I'm picturing the voice of Charlton Heston every time you squeeze Moses' belly. That can't be safe for children under five. I wonder if the NRA knows . . .

Pittsburgh

So I can't get any of my links to post correctly and I'm quickly realizing my personal assistants, formerly known as the I.T. Department, were a much needed necessity in my blog life. So I will post regardless of whether my side bar is up to par, and deal with the details later.

We're in Pittsburgh for a work convention, and despite the lack of perpetual sunshine as is present in San Diego, the city has by far exceeded my expectations. It is like Portland, with a little more history in its brick buildings, a lot fewer hippies, and a lot less political/"We Hate Bush" signage throughout the city. We experienced the Andy Warhol museum yesterday and as I sat in the room of floating silver clouds room, I was transported back to childhood (or some HP-like commercial with people dancing in fields and floating to Flaming Lips music). We then discovered the magic that is Lomography and I am deciding which new camera to purchase for myself. Hopefully, along with a link to Alon's fisheye pictures, a link to a soon-to-be-named photoblog with Pop9 pictures will appear soon as well.
